,,Fenyővize" Nature Trail - 9. station - Ploughlands

A few decades ago the mountain villages of Transylvania were almost completely self-sufficient. The food of people and part of the animal fodder, and most of the raw materials of clothing materials were grown locally. The main crops were the cereals (wheat, rye, barley) and hemp. Even the steep hillsides and mountain tops were plowed in many places, attested by plow-terraces. Nowadays we can find arable land only nearby the settlements and the main crop is potato. The small arable parcels increase the beauty of the landscape. Because here people used very few chemicals, many beautiful flowered weed occurs, which are rare or even protected in Western Europe, like Corn Poppy and Eastern Larkspur.
